Community strategy: defining your audience

Donโ€™t overthink this. Your intended audience are the people you are building for.

These are the people that will find value for the solution youโ€™ve built. They struggle with the same problems that you have, and they are more likely to say โ€œyesโ€ to you.

You can segment based on industry, role or title, demographics, interests or hobbies. It really doesnโ€™t matter as long as you are able to target down to the right people that will find value in what youโ€™ve built.

As a word of caution, it is easy to think big and target everybody in a given industry; don’t do this. Trying to please everybody is the key to pleasing nobody, and the more tightly defined your initial target, the better.
